Jacob's Well
at Jacob's Well Natural Area
A deep, submerged cave spring with crystal-clear waters and a mysterious allure.
The Experience
A Natural Wonder of Texas
Jacob's Well is a breathtaking natural spring and a significant geological formation located in the Texas Hill Country. This karstic artesian well is the headwaters of Cypress Creek and is fed by the Trinity Aquifer, one of the most complex aquifers in the region. Historically, the spring would gush water high into the air, but current flow is reduced due to drought conditions.
Submerged Depths and Dangers
Beneath its inviting surface, Jacob's Well is the second-longest fully submerged cave in Texas. The main conduit extends thousands of feet and plunges to depths of up to 140 feet. While the crystal-clear waters offer a refreshing escape, visitors are reminded that swimming is at their own risk due to the inherent dangers of the cave system, which has unfortunately seen past fatalities. SCUBA diving is prohibited.
A Place of Serenity and History
Surrounding the well are over 80 acres of natural area featuring hiking trails, interpretive gardens, a labyrinth, and a sundial. The area provides opportunities for birding, geocaching, and photography. The serene environment, with its towering stone cliffs and lush vegetation, offers a stark contrast to the powerful, hidden depths of the well itself. This land holds historical significance, having been a vital resource for indigenous tribes for centuries.
How to Find It
Reservations are essential during the swimming season; walk-ins are not permitted.
Know Before You Go
Reservations are mandatory for swimming during the season and must be booked in advance. The water temperature remains a cool 68°F year-round, so bring a towel. Due to ongoing drought, the spring's flow is significantly reduced, impacting its historical dramatic output.
