The Mueller Control Tower is a stunning example of 1961 mid-century modern architecture, designed by Fehr and Granger. It was a recipient of Progressive Architecture Awards, celebrated for its distinctive flared concrete frame and vibrant alternating light-blue and dark-blue porcelain enamel panels. These colorful elements have been beautifully restored, bringing the tower back to its original striking appearance.

A Survivor of Change

This tower holds a unique place in Austin's history as one of only three original buildings from the Robert Mueller Municipal Airport to be preserved. Its survival is a testament to community advocacy and a crucial part of the 2004 City of Austin-Catellus agreement, which prevented its demolition alongside the iconic scalloped-roof terminal. Today, it stands as a photogenic landmark amidst ongoing redevelopment.

While currently offering exterior views, the tower is part of the developing Tower Plaza, envisioned by Studio Balcones. Future plans include a public space with sloped lawns, a pedestrian ramp, and observation platforms, designed to evoke old terminal views and celebrate the site's aviation heritage.
